The Boston-based analyst was reflecting upon a new Stratfor report that suggests the Chinese military is willing to help the Syrian Army retake Idlib in its ongoing fight against foreign-backed militants.
Both China's ambassador and military attache to Syria have raised the possibility of Chinese military operations in Syria alongside the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
The August 3 Stratfor article quotes Ambassador Qi Qianjin as saying that the Chinese "military is willing to participate in some way alongside the Syrian army that is fighting the terrorists in Idlib and in any other part of Syria."
“With this sign that the Chinese may be going to get actually involved - which would be a reversal or at least crack in a 50-year-old policy - is extremely significant,” Welch said.
“The US simply cannot continue to do what it wants around the world if there are military agreements with China and Russia working in tandem,” he added.
Russia has been running in military campaign in Syria since 2015, upon a request by Assad.
Russia’s military assistance, coupled with advisory help from Iran and the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, has allowed Syria to purge terrorists from most of the country and bring to a halt US plans to topple Assad.
China, meanwhile, has increased joint military drills with Russia over the past years and thrown its political support behind Damascus.
“I think it is the best sign yet -- the proof of the adage that the Chinese system needs teeth and the US system needs war,” Welch argued. “You have trillions of dollars on one side spent on infrastructure and development over the last 20 years and trillions of dollars on the Western side spent on murder and mass mayhem,” he went on.
“It is a really good microcosm of how messed up this system is and how close we may be to seeing the sundown of the US empire,” he concluded.
