Taliban Vows Not to Harm Iran over Water Share

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Kabul on Sunday, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund stressed that Afghanistan would never intend to cause damage to Iran concerning the issue of water.

He stated that the Taliban acts with goodwill in this regard, calling for the settlement of problems through understanding.

Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund also asked Iran to behave in accordance with the principles of Islam and brotherhood in the expulsion of illegal Afghan migrants.

For his part, Araqchi said Iran is committed to the respectful treatment of the illegal Afghan refugees.

He stated that Iran has never sought to interfere in Afghanistan’s domestic political issues.

The foreign minister also stressed the need for the full implementation of an agreement that would allow Iran to have its share of water from the Hirmand River.

Highlighting the interconnected security and stability in Iran and Afghanistan, Araqchi said the recent developments in Afghanistan led Iran to the conclusion that it is necessary to broaden cooperation with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

This is the first visit by an Iranian foreign minister to Afghanistan after the Taliban took power in 2021.
