19 Dec 2024 06:05

Islam Times - The suspect behind the terrorist attack that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops, has been detained, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said.

The FSB announced that a 29-year-old Uzbek national, recruited by Ukraine's intelligence services, was arrested for detonating a homemade explosive device in Moscow, TASS reported.

The explosion occurred near a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue, killing Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, born in 1970, and his assistant, Major Polikarpov, born in 1983.

"The FSB, in collaboration with the Russian Interior Ministry and the Russian Investigative Committee, conducted joint operational and investigative actions," the FSB press office said.

The suspect confessed to being recruited by Ukrainian intelligence, according to the FSB.

"He was sent to Moscow on their orders, where he received a powerful improvised explosive device and placed it on an electric scooter near Kirillov's residence," the agency stated.

To monitor the location, the suspect rented a car-sharing vehicle and installed a Wi-Fi video camera, which streamed live footage to organizers in Dnepr (formerly Dnepropetrovsk).

Once the officers were seen leaving the building on the video feed, the explosive device was remotely detonated.

"The Ukrainian intelligence services promised the Uzbek citizen $100,000 and a trip to a European Union country for the assassination of the Russian defense official," the FSB added.

The suspect has been handed over to the Russian Investigative Committee, which is documenting the case under multiple charges, including Terrorist Act (Article 205), Murder (Article 105), Illegal Storage of Explosives (Article 222.1), and Illegal Manufacture of Explosives (Article 223.1) under the Russian Criminal Code.

"He faces potential life imprisonment for these crimes," the FSB said.

The agency emphasized that the Ukrainian intelligence personnel involved in organizing the attack "will also be located and punished."
