South Africa's Ramaphosa Urges End to Israel's ‘Barbaric War’ on Gaza

Islam Times - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for an end to Israel's “Barbaric War” in Gaza, urging global accountability for the humanitarian crisis.
Speaking to Algeria's parliament during a visit on Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “As nations, we know too well the pain of having our lands colonized and our people oppressed. South Africa and Algeria stand firm in our support for the Palestinian people’s quest for self-determination.”
Ramaphosa condemned the violence in Gaza, highlighting the loss of civilian lives and widespread destruction.
“The killing of women, children, and non-combatants; the bombardment of homes, schools, and hospitals; and the denial of humanitarian aid is a stain on the conscience of the world,” he said.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to this injustice.”
His remarks follow South Africa's decision to file a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in late 2023.
The case accuses Israel of failing to uphold its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention after months of intense bombardment in Gaza since October of last year.
Countries including Turkey, Nicaragua, Palestine, Spain, Mexico, Libya, and Colombia have joined the case, which began public hearings in January.
Ramaphosa emphasized, “Israel must be held accountable for its crimes against the people of Gaza.”
He called on the international community to take responsibility and end a genocide.
On the issue of Western Sahara, Ramaphosa reiterated Algeria and South Africa's support for the region's right to self-determination.
“We applaud Algeria for its unwavering support for the struggle of the people of Western Sahara to determine their own future,” he said.
Ramaphosa urged the international community to fulfill its obligations to the people of Western Sahara.
He also stressed the need for global reform, particularly in the United Nations Security Council, to make governance systems “more representative and accountable.”
“We need to build a new world order founded on justice, fairness, and inclusivity,” he stated.
Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of African unity to advance economic and social development, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063, the continent's development blueprint.
“We need to stand up for the innocent civilians who find themselves engulfed in war and conflict,” he said, highlighting the need for global solidarity with marginalized and vulnerable populations.
Ramaphosa concluded by underscoring the shared responsibility of South Africa and Algeria to push for reforms in global governance and advocate for equitable development worldwide.
