UK parliament Brexit vote will be a humiliating defeat for government

16 Jan 2019 04:51

Islam Times - A political analyst from London believes that the highly-anticipated vote in the British parliament on a European Union withdrawal agreement would end in a "humiliating defeat" for the government.

Adam Garrie said in an interview that Prime Minister Theresa May had a little chance of going through the House of Commons with her controversial Brexit deal in a vote planned for later in the day.

“There is a slim possibility that enough members of Theresa May’s party are convinced to vote for the deal is some sort of last minute ... behind-the-scenes agreement,” said he analyst.

However, Garrie said the defeat for May’s Brexit deal would not be as calamitous as it has been claimed by many of her critics.

“I don’t think it is going to fail by as big a margin as some are claiming,” he said, adding, “It’s nevertheless is going to be a fairly humiliating defeat for the current government.”

The Commons began the fifth day of their debate on May’s deal with the EU earlier on Tuesday and reports have suggested that a final vote on the agreement, which includes two documents on Britain’s withdrawal as well as its future relations with the EU, would take place at around 9.00 pm local time.

The highly expected rejection of the Brexit deal, which both May and the EU have described as the best and only solution for Britain, could lead to various scenarios, including a no-deal Brexit on March 29.

May said on Monday that recent developments in the parliament meant that there were high chances for a cancellation of Brexit, rather than a disorderly exit, if the parliament rejects her withdrawal agreement.
